Greed is viewed by many as an evil, to be avoided by all….except oneself. Politicians, among the most greedy for power and material possessions, readily point fingers at others for supposed greed, while simultaneously pursuing their own greedy objectives. Yet those who are accused of being greedy often reflect some very positive characteristics, among them are passion, focus, determination, and vision. The greedy who are successful in achieving their goals of power, wealth, and success often possesses most, if not all, of the positive characteristics noted above. Without these characteristics, the greedy would only be wishful thinkers, rather than being those with the power and wealth. For those individuals identified as being greedy, it is their goals and, not infrequently, their methods that make them appear to be evil. But what would one say if the goals and methods of some of the greedy were considered acceptable? Would greed be viewed as evil?
To Illustrate the point, rather than charge others with being greedy, I shall unabashedly note that I am greedy, very greedy. Matter of fact, I am insatiably greedy and plan to use all means within my power to achieve my greedy goal. I make no excuses for my greed. Every bit of my passion, focus, determination, and vision is now concentrated on achieving my very greedy goal. It is a goal which will assure me of receiving all the best things of life. My greed has no modest aim; my greedy goal is the gaining of eternal life. Yes, eternal life is the object of my striving! What else has any value compared to realization of eternal life with God? Can this world’s wealth, power, success offer any satisfaction compared to eternal life? Then why do so many of us seek that which is, at best, temporary while ignoring that which is permanent? Is my goal of the attainment of eternal life, using all my enthusiasm and determination, considered to be greedy in the evil sense or is it the logical and realistic thirst for true fulfillment and peace?
Be greedy….for eternal life with God!! Strive for it with all the passion and determination one possesses.
